Afroditi Terzi (1991, Greece) lives and works in Amsterdam. She recently graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Her work focuses on the intersection of textile processes and painting. Terzi sews on canvas in a way that resembles automatic writing, with the final form revealing itself only after the canvas is stretched on the wall. She then applies paint to either silence or highlight the patterns drawn with the sewing machine.
Starting from the idea that crafting, and the repetitive gestures of performing a craft, encloses a realm of abstract knowledge to be discovered, Afroditi Terzi delves into the literacy of hand-stitching and sewing; traditions of the women in her family.
