Follies

Gabriel Lester, who often in his early works dealt with the staging of cinematic elements, has created for the exhibition a new production of his installation “How To Act” (1999-2014). The work, a stage-like installation incorporating complex lighting technology, functions like a theater piece. Through the use of light, Lester directs invisible characters through space, leaving these players to the imagination of the viewer. The artist employs various mechanisms —dissection, editing, unfolding and forced perspective — to present a particular aspect of an architecture or an emotional mood to a viewer who is tasked to form his own subjective associations. Lester’s strong need to tell stories and to prompt viewer interaction with his work is also evident within the new installation that he has drafted for the semi-public space outside of the Kunstverein. There, a work with a poster-scrolling display device, similar to those found at a bus stop, will be viewable to the passerby for the duration of a year, constantly altering one’s perception of the location.
