Lives and works in Amsterdam (NL)
Job Koelewijn is a conceptual artist, whose work at the same time is often highly sensory. Although his work takes on various forms – ranging from space-filling and site-specific installations to video, photographs and sculptures – they are essentially always interventions in reality with the aim of intensifying the experience of a place or moment, creating enhanced awareness and sharpening the mind. To achieve this, Koelewijn’s work tends to appeal to several senses simultaneously, making the viewer aware that their senses are conditioned.Â
Language is an important element in Koelewijn’s oeuvre as well and appears in his work in the shape of poetry, literature and philosophy. Since 2006, Koelewijn reads out loud for 45 minutes each day, as part of his Ongoing Reading Project (1 February 2006-present), looking at reading as an exercise for the mind.
Selected solo exhibitions include: De Pont (NL, 2008), Henry Moore Foundation (UK, 2003), Foksal Galerie (PL, 2001), Kiasma Museum for Contemporary Art (FI, 2001), Chisenhale (UK, 2001), De Appel (NL, 2001), Van Abbe Museum (NL, 1995), Vleeshal center for contemporary art (NL, 1995)
